Shayna Zaid & The Catch

Going back to familiar territory for me here in the female singer/songwriter category. It’s rather surprising that New York’s Shayna Zaid & The Catch haven’t received more publicity; yeah, they’ve been featured on commercials occasionally and whatnot, but has anyone actually heard their name?

Shayna Zaid is the lead singer (starting with the obvious, of course) and plays the guitar and concertina, while The Catch is made up of Joel Dean on guitar, Christopher Heinz on drums, Danny Stone on upright bass, and Yan Izquierdo on violin and mandolin. If you’re thinking the music is “warm” you’re heading in the right direction; Zaid & The Catch are suited for times in front of the fireplace while you analyze your life during these brooding snowstorms.

I’m not really sure how else to label Zaid’s music. I can go with catchy, I guess, but that’s a bit of a slight to everything else going on in the sound. Zaid’s smoky pop voice lends itself well to The Catch’s folksy, and at times bluegrass-y, background. But when did bluegrass ever have handclaps? Or bells? Hmm. Dilemma! Maybe I’ll take the easy way out and say Shayna Zaid & The Catch is Feist and Nickel Creek. Not too shabby, eh?

Is this the same Shayna Zaid who recorded the opening theme song for the film ‘Flight Of The Living Dead’?

I have no idea. Odd to have two musicians of the same name, so I’m expecting yes? But that song sounds nothing like her current material. I’ll try to find out for you.

  • she sang ‘among the dead’ or the movie flight of the living dead.
