Matt and Kim @ Siren

A lot of good things have been said about Matt and Kim‘s live show, and their performance at Siren isn’t going to change that. The pair’s main stage-ending set at 7:30 p.m. attracted a massive crowd, which packed the long, narrow street serving as general admission space as well as the fenced-off kiddie park stage left.

And for a band that consists entirely of keyboard and drums…holy shit. Matt kicked things off by launching into a hype man MC routine, which the crowd ate up. Their songs — a combination of originals and short vignettes of popular rap tunes — were delivered with an absurd amount of gusto, and the two performers could physically not be having more fun. Kim wore an endless grin while pounding away on her drumkit, as if smiling for every camera thrust into the air, and Matt regularly jumped around and pumped his fist when he wasn’t using both hands to play his instrument.

And, hey, they played surprisingly tightly too, for all their theatrics. It was a thrilling show, for both the physicality of it and the fact that neither Matt nor Kim seemed to play too sloppily. The fact that they were headlining a festival at a stage with its back to the ocean and famous boardwalk, mere minutes from where they’re from, just made all the music go down that much sweeter.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeere’s Siren!

As you all know by now, this past Saturday was Siren Fest, a free, day-long, two-stage concert extravaganza normally held right below the Coney Island Boardwalk. Hell, the main stage is even in the shadow of the famous Cyclone coaster. It’s all very neat, except for the fact that in an astonishing move, […]

[MP3] Andy Clockwise: “The Casanova (Remember Love)”

I had never heard of Los Angeles-based Andy Clockwise before popping open the ol’ Knox Road mailbag this morning. And now that I have heard of the group, I’m better for it. For serious.

See, lately I’ve been favoring songs that are all massive towers of instruments and hyper-emotional vocals, and they’re great, seriously, […]

Phenomenal Video Saturday: DeVotchKa

Welcome, minions, to Phenomenal Video Saturday. I’m using the video I have this week to make a point. A very important one, too.

See, there’s a school of thought out there of people who saw Little Miss Sunshine, a fine film, and latched onto DeVotchKa‘s “How it Ends,” the song that begins the movie. […]

Stream an hour long Mumford & Sons Concert

Considering this is such a long video, I hesitated to post it. But then I listened, transfixed, to the first song of the set, “Sigh No More.” It continues to baffle me how the band can conjure up so much raw intensity with only a kick drum and tambourine in terms of percussion.

Anyway, […]

[MP3] Kevin Devine: “She Stayed as Steam”

Guess what, guys? Kevin Devine has a new EP out today! Came as a bit of a surprise to me, too. It’s called She Stayed as Steam and is made up of two new songs (“She Stayed as Steam” and “Big Bad Man”) and two remixes (“Breathe, Breathe Deep” and “Another Bag of Bones”) […]

Phenomenal Video Saturday: There Will Be Fireworks

I’ve written about There Will Be Fireworks before, and how much of a fan I am of the band’s Explosions In The Sky meets every Scottish band ever sound, though it gives me sadface that they only have one, self-titled album.

But holy tantalizing previews of new songs, Batman, it’s a tantalizing preview of […]

The Worst Things: Cody Simpson

So it looks like things have escalated in the I’m-a-prepubescent-boy-who-looks-a-bit-too-metrosexual-for-my-own-good-and-caters-to-8-year-old-girl wars. In a move that totally may or may not have left the Bieberverse speechless, this kid Cody Simpson seems to have been spawned in the depths of hell, or something. Where did he come from? Is this new? How far […]

Dog and wolf sing a heartbreaking duet

Full disclosure: this duet is not heartbreaking. Nor is it a wolf and a dog singing it.

It’s just freaking awesome. I don’t need to say any more.

Wolf Parade gets so close on Expo 86

The main distinguishing factor between Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown, one of Spencer Krug’s many other projects, is the song construction and destination. Generally, while Sunset Rubdown prefers long-winded, ever-changing sounds and structures within the same song, Wolf Parade is its more straightforward brother. They both had some of the same qualities — the […]
