Dancing white people make Neon Indian’s Fallon performance super uncomfortable

Basically everybody is loving Neon Indian’s debut TV performance on Jimmy Fallon’s show last night, and they played pretty well sans the awkward people dancing in the background of EVERY SHOT. I couldn’t feel more uncomfortable. Maybe it’s just upsetting because I’m the kind of person who can’t help but think about how these people A. Aren’t into the music, B. Are dancing to say “Look! That’s me in the corner of the screen!” and C. All dance like they are moms. All of them. Moms.

Now, I’m not saying I could dance any better. I’m in fact a terrible dancer, which is why I DON’T DANCE. Especially at mild-mannered late night comedy shows. I just don’t see the need to include dancing crowds behind the band. Will this say “It’s ok to dance along at home!” or “Just so you know, this is music you can maybe dance to at some point in the future?” Yuck. Help me understand. I didn’t get my degree in Uncomfortable Things and I am lost in this new world where these things are ok.

To the people who pick live acts for the show: Great job! Neon Indian is wonderful! To the people who were responsible for this monstrosity: Please find another job. I don’t want you to be unemployed because that’s a serious issue plaguing our nation and I’m not a monster. I have just seen a few handclaps, shoulder sways and hip shakes too many.
