LOL @ AWFUL Grammy nominations

the_2009_grammys

ZOMG, the 52nd annual Grammy Award nominees are out and they’re SO bad it’s actually funny. Unlike last year when they were so bad it was just all awkward glances and kicking nonchalantly at the ground. Nono, this time they’re really going for the ol’ We’re Old And Irrelevant Award. Case and point in the following points:

  • Album Of The Year is between Beyonce (decent album for a pop album), The Black Eyed Peas (bad album for a pop album), Lady Gaga (actually pretty talented), Dave Matthews Band (ok, now really?) and Taylor Swift (apparently talented?). I know you guys have 14-year-old nieces who have needs, but let’s be real.
  • Best New Artist is between Zac Brown Band (whoever that is), Keri Hilson (had that one song?), MGMT (they’re new now?), Silversun Pickups (two mediocre albums in, I believe), and The Ting Tings (come and gone).
  • Best Rock Album is the biggest laff. SO obvious that A. “Rock” is kinda dead at the moment and B. Whoever makes the nominations is OLD. Nominees are AC/DC, Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood, Green Day, Dave Matthews Band and U2. LOL you guyzzz. I don’t need to say anymore.

It isn’t all doom and gloom! There are some bright spots! After all, MGMT is nominated and they’re good! Some other positive things:

  • The award for Best Alternative Album is usually the saving grace at the Grammys. This year we have exactly one good nominee, a couple ok nominees and some bad ones. In that order: Phoenix, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, David Byrne & Brian Eno, Death Cab For Cutie and Depeche Mode. Wow…
  • Neko Case is up for Best Recording Package! She’s an artist we can all at least respect, right? Right.

Full list of nominations is up on the Grammy site. There’s something else we can do that night right? Probably a rerun of Scrubs on Comedy Central or something.

  • MGMT is the only band that deserves the ‘best new artist’ award imo. Super talented. Also, you guys forgot to mention one of the most talented artists—Imogen Heap. Nominated twice this year! Great Article =)

I’m kind of curious who actually thinks that winning an award chosen this poorly can still be an honor. I mean, come on.

    Best new artist: Silversun Pickups?

    New? I lol’d.

  • The Taylor Swift album is flat-out great and the Dave Matthews Band record is their best set in years.

Hipster-centrism isn’t any less laughable than the opposing stance.

  • Dave… the Grammys, Emmys, etc, etc, et al are all just a bunch of meaningless industry-self-congratulatory bullshit waste of time & money. They could put every “cool” Pitchfork-friendly band on the nominee list and it would still be a pointless parade of stupidity.

Anti-hipsterism/hipster-centrism/whatever has nothing to do with it.

Lighten up, man. Why you always gotta be bring us down?!

    Cheers & hugs (seriously),
    Aaron

  • I usually sniff at Grammy nods, move along and get to work on more important activities like eating and sleeping. Yes. We all know Silversun Pickups and MGMT aren’t new (to us), but taking into consideration the “first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist” explanation on the site, I understand. Whatever. What I am pleased to see is that wild and crazy guy’s ‘The Crow’ is up for Best Bluegrass. My mother was playing it non-stop when I visited her over the holiday weekend. I do have an unhealthy crush on the man, yes, but the record itself is quite good and the sound of a banjo always makes me happy.

“Chaos in the midst of chaos isn’t funny, but chaos in the midst of order is.”

    Go Team Steve!

They are what they are, but it’s nice to see some deserving nominations like Phoenix, Pearl Jam (for “The Fixer”), Lonely Island (“I’m On A Boat” haha), Robert Randolph, and the YYY’s.

    Raphael Saadiq got snubbed.

I can’t even the Grammys without severe nausea setting in immediately. It’s pretty sad.

  • Zac Brown Band is kind of jammy. I’m surprised they were nominated. Same goes for Phish with the boxed set. Grammys are booooriiiiing.
