Why is the new Alice In Wonderland trailer not exciting?

Look, I love Tim Burton. And Johnny Depp. I’m not going to lie to you guys, I’m on the boat with all those Hot Topic teens to Burton/Depp island full of colorful, twisted landscapes and friendly, scissor-handed creatures. So when I finally got a chance to watch the trailer to the duo’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, I was all giddy with anticipation. But when I sat down and watched it, the excitement was gone. I felt empty.

I think the problem is that the movie is exactly what I’d expect from Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Big crazy landscape enshrouded by mystery with heavily made up characters who are clearly mentally ill but still lovable juxtaposed against an innocent beautiful female lead? Check and check. Movies shouldn’t be like this, they should defy expectations and amaze! But instead, this trailer makes me just say: “Huh.” Good job, Tim. You’ve done it again. I hope you’re happy because I’m sure it’ll be great. I just might catch it on HBO next year.
