Bell Orchestre

Bell OrchestreMontreal six-piece Bell Orchestre is one of those bands that you just gotta respect. They do instrumental stuff, so there aren’t any stupid words to muddy up their sound. The band includes Sarah Neufeld and Richard Parry, of Arcade Fire, and the influence is super obvious.

The songs take you through a dark melodious world with crying strings and looming horns. Much like Arcade Fire, they make a lot that kind of somber music–not the best idea if you’re trying to stay cheery and upbeat, but great to mellow out to. They plan on releasing a follow-up to their 2005 debut sometime in the new year. In the mean time, here’s a single from their debut, Recording a Tape the Colour of the Light, and another rarer track (from I Guess I’m Floating).
