12 Days of Christmas Music: Weird Collaborations

Christmas Frog

Day 5 of our Christmas music series goes to those bizarre collaborations that have happened this year. Seriously, I want to see the meeting where these people get together and say “You know what would be swell? Us making a Christmas song together!”

“A Christmas Duel”

The first track I came across was the duet from The Hives and Cyndi Lauper called “A Christmas Duel.” I originally posted about the song when it first came out, but it’s worth mentioning again, if not just for the fact that these two forces actually came together to make music. The sweet music clashes with the crass lyrics, and that’s pretty much the whole point. I don’t know about you, but my fingers are crossed for a full-length LP from the two.

Colbert’s Bizarre Mashup of People

If you’re a fan of Stephen Colbert’s absurd Comedy Central show, the next song won’t surprise you much as an absurd collaboration. But take a step back and appreciate for a moment the fact that Stephen Colbert, Elvis Costello, Feist, Toby Keith and John Legend all made a song together. That’s right, a comedian, old punk rocker, sweet indie princess, country dude, and soul person. Although each artist did an individual song for Colbert’s Christmas special, they all joined forces for “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?” a song first made famous by Costello back in the day. It’s a bit of a hodgepodge, but worth it to hear all the different musical styles forced together.

L.A. Musicians Coming Together??

Our last collab. is a new take on “All I want For Christmas” done by Flowers of Doom featuring Har Mar Superstar and Adam Green of Moldy Peaches. GUH?? Ok, so to get this straight, we have some sort of L.A. band with weirdo Har Mar and defunct indie sweetheart Green. Yeah, sure ok. With that combination, you’d expect something wild and crazy, no? What you get however, is a surprisingly mild “All I Want For Xmas is You.” Maybe this is supposed to be tongue-in-cheek? Or maybe they just wanted to make something nice. Is that so wrong?
