Grammy Nominations: Meh.

The nominations for the 51st Grammy Awards are out tonight, and there aren’t a lot of surprises. Adele got a ton of nominations, as did Radiohead, Coldplay, and Robert Plant & Allison Krauss. The full nominations are here, but here are the most interesting (or rather, surprising) parts:

-M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” is nominated for Record of the Year, despite coming out forever ago and being “ehhhh”d by many top 40 radio stations this summer.

-Daft Punk is up for Best Dance Recording for Harder Better Faster Stronger against Hot Chip’s Ready For the Floor.

-Brazilian Girls’ New York City is nominated for Best Electronic/Dance Album.

-Metallica’s Death Magnetic got a bunch of nominations despite being panned by everybody.

-A bunch of not so alternative albums are up for Best Alternative Album.

Nouns by No Age is nominated for Best Recording Package, whatever that is.

You can tune in to the show on February 8 to see if your favorite bands/artists win what they call a “gramaphone award!” Here are some mp3s to hold you over, you hungry pack of wolves.

Adele – “Chasing Pavements”

Robert Plant & Allison Krauss – “Please Read The Letter”

M.I.A. – “Paper Planes”

Hot Chip – “Ready For The Floor”

Brazilian Girls – “Good Time”

No Age – “Eraser”

Best Recording Package is basically like Best Album Cover, but for the whole package (not just the cover). The CD version of Nouns had a huge booklet with tons of pictures and whatnot, but they didn’t include it with the vinyl :[

I’d like to see someone try to beat Of Montreal’s packaging in next year’s grammys… The vinyl was a gatefold sleeve with a huge fold-out, strangely shaped art thing. pretty impressive, if i do say so myself
