[Abby’s Road] Best wishes

“Despite the commerce involved, we hope you will consider this our gift to you.”
-Low’s Christmas liner notes.

Ahhh the holidays. For me it’s Christmas. Now while I lean toward the more secular, bedazzled version  containing spangles, boughs of holly and sticky mugs of Glühwein rather than mangers and swaddling clothes (blatant honesty, folks), I understand that all encompassing ‘holiday time’ means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. I have shamelessly chosen the Candy Cane Lane version and I’m happy with it.

[Abby’s Road] The Happiest Melancholia

We, as music lovers and collectors, are blessed and cursed I think. Here’s the scoop: we have at our fingertips a seemingly endless supply of emotional stimulants and downers. If elated one can crank up a particularly smasheverythinganddance record to conjure up even more jubilation; if supremely sad, the leveling quiet of, say, post rock or classical scores can calm frayed nerves. For most of us, music is never ever just background noise. For me, for sure.

[Stream] Justin Bieber’s 35-minute ambient opus

Can you believe this is going to be my second post mentioning Justin Bieber on Knox Road? I have good reason, I promise. But I didn’t want to actually post a picture of him, considering our site’s no-robots policy, so here’s an adorable puppy.

Anyway, onto the content. Have you ever said to yourself, […]

Jónsi brings us all back to our epic childhoods on Go

With Go, the first ever solo release from Jónsi, we get to see how much of Sigur Rós is his doing. The answer to that, of course, is a good amount. Go is full of massive, epic declarations fitting for the Icelandic post-rock tastemakers, although, at the same time, a bit of the mystery […]

[Abby's Road] It's about the sound, not the words

It never fails: whenever I overhear mumblings of folks yammering away about Jim Morrison and his fantastic poetry (snore) I have to stop myself in my tracks. I. Hate. The. Doors. Phenomenal Video Saturday: Sigur Rós

So I was trolling along YouTube this morning, just filling my normal quota of adorable animals being tickled*, when I came across Sigur Rós playing “Gobbledigook” live. Don’t ask how I ended up there, busybody. I have my reasons.

I always knew that performances of “Gobbledigook” were super fun affairs, with a billion (give […]

Jónsi is going to release the best solo album ever ever ever ever

So it’s not particularly new news that Jónsi (aka that guy with the high voice from Sigur Ros) will be releasing his first solo album, called Go, on March 22, 2010. What is new is the fact that when you hear it you’ll double over crying and your tears will be sticks of […]

iTunes Mixery

Got another one for ya. For those who don’t know, this is iTunes Mixery part seis. Here’s how it goes: I play iTunes on shuffle -> tell you which song comes up -> provide the mp3 and a tidbit -> continue until five songs and embarrassment are complete. See my previous “mixeries” at […]

Sigur Rós’ Ágætis byrjun named best Icelandic album ever

A survey by Icelandic National Radio and Tonlist.is ranked Sigur Rós’ 1999 album (10 years ago this month), Ágætis byrjun, as the greatest Icelandic album of all time. To compile the list, the team talked to experts in the music press and industry and conducted a public poll. Sigur Rós’ 2008 album, Með […]
