Phenomenal Video Saturday: mewithoutYou

Now, I’ve posted about mewithoutYou once so very long ago, so I guess now it all comes full circle or something, because almost an entire year later I’m posting an awesome live video from that SAME BAND! It’s so crazy, right?

This is an in-store performance of the song “O, Porcupine” from the band’s 2006 album Brother, Sister. What I love about it — besides how surprisingly well Aaron Weiss’ sing-speak translates to a live setting, even one so intimate — is how Weiss balances obvious passion for his lyrics with a willingness to play around with it. He yells lyrics and moves around his small space on the stage, and then, a minute later, encourages the audience to “throw CDs on the ground” mid-song. I’m under the opinion that the band’s Christian slant is a bit too heavy-handed, but there’s still no denying the power of the song. All it’s missing? The guest vocals by Jeremy Enigk (Sunny Day Real Estate) that can be heard on the album version. Which I’ve graciously attached. I’m such a giver. What’s that? A gift, for me? How kind!
