[MP3] Ólafur Arnalds: "Þú ert sólin"

Yesterday my best friend Ólafur Arnalds released the first single off his upcoming album, …and they have escaped the weight of darkness, called “Þú ert sólin.” It means “you are the sun” in Iceland-speak, which has nothing to do with the fact that the picture of the young composer is absolutely terrifying.

The new song is nice in the way it manages to climax without being too obvious or overbearing — the minimalism Arnalds is often attributed with is here in full force. The song is strong, but contained. It’s like fitting a bunch of unicorns in a jar. It’s pretty and they’re strong, but they’re not going to bust out of there. Just think of that. Basically.

Maybe the song is so pretty because Arnalds is actually a ghost. Not sure how those correlate, but again, look at that picture. Yikes.
