Phenomenal Video Saturday: Arcade Fire and David Bowie

Now there’s a combination for the ages. Didja know they performed some songs together a few years ago? I did. So did Heather Graham. She loves this shit.

This is a performance from Fashion Rocks 2005, a concert with a bunch of big-name artists that effectively kicked off Fashion Week that year. After the esteemed Mr. Bowie took the stage to perform “Life on Mars?” solo, he came back later — with Arcade Fire in tow — for a fantastic rendition of “Wake Up,” off the latter’s Funeral.

And it’s awesome because we all know how energetic and transcendental Arcade Fire can be when performing live, but take that and add a positively regal-looking David Bowie playing a 12-string guitar, and it’s like turning up the song 35 notches. And hell, he doesn’t even get an entire verse to himself, considering Win Butler feels the need to echo his lines. But either way, the audience was enthralled: “Where am I?” Graham asked afterward.
