Notable Album Release: Retribution Gospel Choir - 2

Retribution Gospel Choir is what Low sounds like with the volume and speed/intensity turned up about 15 notches. And I’m not just making the comparison for comparison’s sake (gosh, you have no respect for my writing!); two out of the three members, lead singer Alan Sparhawk and bassist Steve Garrington are actually in Low. The third is drummer and vocalist Eric Pollard.

After that mini-preface for what you should expect from RGC’s sound, you’ll be excited to know that they have a new album, 2, ready to go for January 26 on Sub Pop. I’ll be honest, I haven’t listened too intently to much of RGC’s previous material; though what I have heard off their self-titled debut album, released in 2008, has shown tremendous promise, and the first single off 2, “Hide It Away”, expands on that sound. If I had to say from hearing one song, it’s less of a Low side project and branches off on its own. We’re still getting the slowcore influence, but “Hide It Away” thrashes about wildly and gets the blood boiling.
