[Off My Radar] Smith Westerns

the smith westerns

[Ed. Note: A lot of music comes out in a given year. I’m busy, ok? I don’t have all the time in the world to hear everything released and tell you about it. So I’ve decided to go back and visit all the great music that was, clearly, just off my radar.]

Smith Westerns are just a ragtag group of kids (and I mean kids, we’re talking ages 17-19 here) from Chicago. It’s clear that they spent way too much a perfectly suitable amount of time listening to Nuggets and writing their odes to the fuzzy garage pop genre of so long ago. This is great. It’s always fun to be reminded of simple, straight-from-your-parents’-basement rock and roll that DOES exist out there.

Their debut, self-titled album came out in June and it’s just a wonderful gem of well-written tracks. The kids are talented, no doubt about it. They’re going on tour with Girls, and definitely have potential for success, so keep an eye ear all five senses out. In the mean time, I’m going to go down to my parents’ basement, dust off the distortion pedal and jam on Smith Westerns at least until my mom has to go take a nap..
