As Tall As Lions - You Can't Take It With You

Ending the longest string of [MP3] openings (Edit: Jon beat me to it) in the history of KR (Jamie got a little wild there, I know) is a brief spotlight on As Tall As Lions‘ new effort, You Can’t Take It With You, which drops August 18 (next week).

To be perfectly honest, I knew very little about As Tall As Lions, and I’m not entirely sure why. They seem to have quite the following – I think their poppier tendencies may have led them into a bit of a different circle than those to which I’m privy. Jon knew a fair bit about them, so he’s obviously more in touch with music and life than I am. Either way, I was thoroughly blown away by You Can’t Take It With You upon first listen, and still find myself coming back to it when in need of something fresh and exciting. (In comparison to much of the cutesy indie and lo-fi folk / what have you that I’ve currently been giving the time of day.)

You Can’t Take It With You mixes such a diverse set of sounds, with stirring harmonies, atmospheric electronics, and Britpop influences up the wazoo. Hard-hitting and complete choruses dominate as full-fledged production guides the way. But I don’t really care; When did production ever hurt anyone? Mark this as one of my favorite releases of the year. Pre-order You Can’t Take It With You via Triple Crown Records.
