A review of the up-and-coming The Hush Now

The Hush Now, not to be confused with The Hush Sound, hold a soft spot in my heart coming from my hometown (…city) of Boston. The five-piece indie rockers mesh some background psychedelica with lighter fare to create sounds of both dissonance and difference. The difference being that they don’t follow what an arrangement “should” sound like (although, I would be remiss not to mention I sense a bit of Built To Spill), whatever that means. Sometimes indie rockers and musicians in general can fall victim to playing off of a chord progression that everyone recognizes as working for the greater pop sensibilities. But as our Scarlet Ending friends and several others here on Knox Road have shown us, breaking the boundaries of what is “right” and “wrong” is a big part of the battle in the musical sense. And The Hush Now fit that bill. That being said, they could use some work on their vocals a bit, as they come off plaintive and straining at times (not my style), but for a band in its beginning stages, they’ll hopefully work through that phase.

Their music will certainly appeal to some and push others away. Find out for yourself – they have their self-titled debut album up for free download on their MySpace.
