About my interview with After Last Season’s Mark Region

I’ve received a lot of questions about my interview with After Last Season writer/director/producer Mark Region, so I guess I’ll do some verifying. (See the bizarre trailer here and the interview here).

I found Mark Region’s phone number through a WhoIs search on the website for his production company, Index Square. Since the number was public information and listed as Index Square’s contact, I called. On the other end was a very flustered and nervous man who identified himself as Mark Region.

I interviewed him to the point where I felt too intrusive and he sounded too nervous. Should I have just gone all out and grilled him? Maybe. I would have loved to ask him more questions (whose living room was it shot in, how did the computer graphics cost that much) but his tone made it seem like I had overstayed my welcome, and I saw no sense in going on.

There is no reason for me to doubt that the man I talked to was not legitimate. The fact that he was so taken by surprise and sounded so flustered told me he’s a real guy. Other information on WhoIs also shows no affiliation with any big name company or person. I very well may have been had by somebody with a lot of talent, but I’m going to use my intuition and say, no matter how bizarre it may seem, that this thing is for real.

But no way is Mark Region a real name. It sounds too much like (not a quote from him) “My real name isn’t for movies so let me combine two words that sound like a name.”

    Hi Jamie,
Did Mark sound like he was joking when he said it cost “$5 Million”? Are you sure it wasn’t a joke? Hard to know what’s what, but I guess that’s part of his aim.

    Thanks for the interview.

    cheers,
    Chris from Canada

I’m waiting for this to be some sort of April Fools thing to get us all! (Either as a blockbuster film…or nothing.)

Jamie, there isn’t a WhoIs link on http://www.indexsquare.com. Can you repost the contact info? I’m trying to get a hold of him for press reasons.

I found all Mark’s info on the WhoIs. Did you get it?

Chris, he did not sound like he was joking. He sounded 100% serious, and a little nervous.

Mike, I hesitate to post personal information. If you want to talk more about it, send me an e-mail at knoxroadblog@gmail.com

Here’s my wild theory…the movie “After Last Season” is a giant marketing arm for upcoming “Where The Wild Things Are”, where Mark Ruffalo’s character (who isn’t named on IMDB) plays the title role of director Mark Region, and his movie “After Last Season” is one of the many things that drives Max bonkers. Plus the whole thing strikes me as pure Spike Jones…

This movie is opening this weekend in Austin, I don’t know anyone who has seen. There’s some local call in radio shows that have some coverage of movies, etc. and two different people kept calling in this past week plugging the movie saying how good it is.

It seems like this is some sort of viral marketing campaign or spoof. A friend of mine here in Austin says one of the women in the trailer works at Austin Film Studios, which might indicate some sort of connection to Richard Linklater.

  • Did you not know there is already a sequel being filmed ready for release next year? and i don’t know what you mean…….. ?
