MP3s of some SXSW artists, part three

one-day-international

The third installment of my SXSW artists feature. If you’re new to the game, I list some of the acts I’m excited about, with mp3s and a brief note about each.

So far, I’ve done A-E, F-J, and today I work the extensive K-O. More to come soon! (See the previous installments at the end of the post.)

  • The Kin – “New Day” [MP3] Brother singer/songwriters from Australia. Accessible, but not without complexities and some pretty harmonies. This song grows on me every time I listen.
  • Vijay Kishore – “NeverEnds” [MP3] Wonderful falsetto singer/songwriter from England. In writing about Kishore, it would be wrong to not show you this piece from his bio: “Born and raised in the Handsworth district of Birmingham of Indian parentage Vijay’s music is an ambiguous fusion of his anglo asian heritage bringing comparisons from listeners to everything from the sufi infused tones of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to Thom Yorke,Jeff Buckley or even Nina Simone and PJ Harvey.” Some hefty comparisons there don’t you think? But this is quite a beautiful song.
  • Ladyhawke – “My Delirium” [MP3] Jamie wrote about this hot New Zealand (what a surprise) up-and-comer way back when. Blending catchy beats with accented vocals, she makes for quite the listen.
  • Alessi Laurent-Marke – “The Horse” [MP3] Folksy, cutesy, artsy, sy, sy, sy. From London. She’s great.
  • The Lemurs – “Blackspot” [MP3] These guys from Austin,TX burst with Rooney style pop.
  • Longview – “History” [MP3] The addition of Ulrich Schnauss on keys has made this London pop/rock crew a must-hear. “History” is a crafty gem.
  • Loquat – “Harder Hit” [MP3] I’ve loved San Francisco’s Loquat for a very long time. There’s nothing else to say about these girls.
  • The Love Language – “Lalita” [MP3] Everybody dance! These Raleigh, NC guys know how to rock out. Expect big things.
  • Marching Band – “Make No Plans” [MP3] SO HAPPY. This Swedish outfit made my honorable mention list for best albums of ’08, but had I spent more time with it, it may have broken the top 5. See my earlier post about them.
  • The Matches – “Wake The Sun” [MP3] Another previously discussed band (and song, might I add), this time from Oakland, CA. I would be more excited if all their songs sounded like this. But unfortunately, this is the only gem that I’ve heard so far. Here’s to hoping for less punk and more “Wake The Sun”
  • Midnight Youth – “The Letter” [MP3] Some catchy stuff from this New Zealand group who are well-known in the down under part of the world but not so much up here.
  • Miniature Tigers – “Cannibal Queen” [MP3] Discussed extensively by Bob, these Phoenix, AZ guys know how to make their candy pop.
  • My Latest Novel – “Dragonhide” [MP3] These Scottish guys create sprawling epics. Wait through the whole song.
  • Ohbijou – “Black Ice” [MP3] Cute, tender vocals with a heavily-stringed, keys-laden background. What more could I ask for from this Toronto, Ontario outfit?
  • One Day International – “Miss Your Mouth” [MP3] If you haven’t heard the Irish One Day International, get on it. Immediately. Achingly beautiful folk pop with a sound that blossoms throughout each song. In case you can’t tell, they are amazing. More to come on One Day International in the future.
