Best of New Zealand: Thought Creature

Thought CreatureThought Creature tore onto the New Zealand music scene earlier this year with fuss and fanfare. Didn’t notice? Well to catch you up, the Auckland band released their debut album Teleport Palace to praise from critics and fans alike. On Einstein Music Journal, a group of some of the biggest NZ musicians voted the album the best of 2008.

Teleport Palace is a solid 51 minutes of eerie guitar and hollowly half-chanted half-sung lyrics. It kind of reminds me of the music you might hear if the boat going down the river Styx threw a dance party (death/torture theme?). Crisp beats and pulsing bass are an invitation to get on your feet, albeit a bit slowly.

“Words Can’t Save You” kicks off the album right giving way to the more upbeat “Kamakaze T.V.” and the standout single “Shake About.” On Palace, Thought Creature blurs the line between music you can dance to and music you veg out to. Kind of like pouring molasses on fire ants. What, is that cruel?
