12 Days of Christmas Music: Bing Crosby’s “Merry Christmas”

bing_crosby_-_merry_christmasMerry Christmas (to all who celebrate that sort of thing)! To conclude this series is the greatest Christmas album of all time, Bing Crosby’s Merry Christmas. Sure, I’m old fashioned, and maybe this is a lame pick because, OH Bing Crosby is SOOO predictable and great blah blah blah. Well he is great, and this album is wonderful.

Crosby’s version of “White Christmas” is classic and it’s the one everybody thinks of when the song comes up. “Jingle Bells,” done with the Andrews Sisters, is another great version primarily because it contains scatting and sass (band name anyone?). The album concludes with one of the best holiday songs ever, “Mele Kalikimaka” (the Hawaiian way to say Merry Christmas to you).

What really gets me about Bing Crosby though is that he captures the fun in Christmas. And I’m the kind of guy who likes fun. Sure, you have your weird emotional songs (Bright Eyes) and your soft spiritual songs (Sufjan). You even have your classic Christmas music videos (thanks Ali Lohan!). But nothing can capture the happy spirit of the holidays like my man, Mr. Bing Crosby.
