Memphis

What do you get when you take Amy Millan out of Canandian troupe Stars and replace her with a guy? Answer:  memphisMemphis. That’s basically all there is to it. Memphis’ instrumentation is so similar to that of Stars that if Amy Millan’s ethereal voice wasn’t missing I wouldn’t notice the difference. For real. Memphis is Torquil Campbell (the other Stars vocalist) and one of his longtime friends, Chris Dumont. It’s essentially Campbell’s side project while not recording with the rest of his crew. If you like Stars, you will probably like Memphis. While I think Campbell gets worse of a rep than he should (he is unfairly matched with one of the more remarkable female singers, in my opinion, of current times), he just isn’t the same without Millan’s presence. I can’t help but compare the two groups. And that’s what brings Memphis down to merely an average level.

I do, however, enjoy listening to Memphis – Campbell’s voice is incredibly soothing. But I think that I would enjoy any music having to do with Stars. So I’m probably biased.

Memphis – “I’ll Do Whatever You Want”

I’ll just let you listen to the other stuff too:

Amy Millan – “Skinny Boy”

Stars – “14 Forever” (off their new digital EP Sad Robots)
